Welsh Models' 1/144 scale
C-46 Commando

Description
Between the old William's Brother's 1/72nd scale injection-molded kit, coupled with the updated re-release, and with the Welsh Models 1/144th scale kit, that's about all there is, should someone want to model a C-46. I opted for the latter and this is the result.
The model is finished in Floquil paints. DrawDecals provided the Evert's Air Cargo livery. The kit is mixed media, with vacu-formed fuselage halves, resin wings and tail, and a bag of soft white metal parts for the props and landing gear. I emphasize the word "soft" as the one piece landing gear legs and wheels are easily bent. Engines are molded integrally with the cowlings and show sufficient detail after painting. I added some plastic support tabs to the insides of the fuselage halves to provide more "grab" for the liquid glue and for overall internal support. Wingspan measures a little under 9 inches - a perfect size for my showcase. A little pastel weathering on the upper and lower inner wing roots gave "the look" to this old cargo hauler.
I do not hesitate to recommend the Welsh Models kit. With one piece wing and tail halves, construction proceeds rapidly.
A full-build article will be appearing in an upcoming issue of FineScale Modeler magazine. |
