Trans Ams in Black and White

by Steve Mesner

Monogram 1/24 1970 1/2 and 1978 Pontiac Trans Ams

Description

Here are two 1970s Pontiac Firebird Trans Ams from Monogram, both built
straight from the box.

The black ‘78 will be instantly recognizable to any fan of the movie “Smoky and the Bandit.” This kit dates back to 1978, and has recently been reissued again in a new box.

I airbrushed the body with Model Master Classic Black, thinned with lacquer thinner, and rubbed out when dry with Wright’s Silver Creme silver polish. The kit decals were applied directly over the polished paint, as the real car’s “screaming chicken” markings were also a type of big decal, not painted on.

The interior is painted Model Master Black Chrome trim. The gold trim was picked out with Testor Gold in the small bottle.

The white 1970 1/2 kit is of much newer vintage, first appearing in the early 1990s. The only alteration I made to it was to scribe in the panel lines around the front fender air vents. These are separate pieces on the real car, but are molded in the kit as if they are an integral part of the fender itself, which they are not. The body is Model Master Classic White, airbrushed directly over the white kit plastic (no primer) and again rubbed out with Wright’s (no clearcoat). I built this model when it first appeared in the early ‘90s and the Classic White so far shows little if any sign of “yellowing.”

The kit decals were used for the stripe, as again these were big vinyl “decals” in real life. One small problem with this kit is trying to match the decal color to paint the “shaker” hood scoop. I used Model Master Ford Engine Blue, which is not a perfect match. I should have mixed up a custom blend, but I was in a hurry to get this model built--I finished it in just seven days, working four to five hours a night on it.  The interior is, if I remember correctly, Model Master Blue Angel Blue.

Both models have chassis painted in Model Master Black Chrome Trim and engines in Model Master Pontiac Engine Blue.

The Monogram Trans Ams are hard to beat for quick, easy, fun, good-looking
builds.

Note: As this is written, AMT currently has the old MPC ‘78 Trans Am (1/25
scale) in reissue. I’ve never built that kit and can’t comment on its accuracy or fit,
but the Monogram kit goes together just fine!

Model on!
